The Tuskegee Airmen and the Jewish People: How our Past Inspires the Future Sponsored by Beth Shalom v'Emeth Reform Temple ( B'ShERT) FREE and on ZOOM on June 26 @ 4 pm. Register at https://bshertairmen.eventbrite.com for link. This program will bring to life the challenges, accomplishments, and heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen and their lasting impact on society today. Rabbi Heidi Hoover of B’SHERT will introduce our panelists. We will be joined by Lt. Herbert Thorpe, an airman who did not fight the Nazis in the skies but fought hard against discrimination on the ground, and Patt Terrelongue and Kimberly LeBlanc, both of whom are descendants of fighter pilot airmen and found inspiration in the lives of their elders. It was through the driving force of discrimination that the airmen related to the Jewish people because they understood what it was like to feel less than human. And a surprising, a little-known fact about the airmen is that they went against the orders of President Roosevelt and took part in the bombing of railroad bridges and railroad yards in Budapest and on Nazi industrial sites in the Auschwitz region during the war. The panelists will be engaged in conversation by supervising attorney, Cynthia Groomes Katz of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). The story of our Tuskegee Airmen began in WWII with discrimination but gradually built a foundation for generations of families inspired to do good because they stood on the shoulders of giants.
  • • There was almost an elevated railroad line in Ditmas Park In 1903, regular tracks ran along the street. "The railroad was privately owned, and the city told the railroad ‘You have to get these tracks off the street.' They were going to build an elevated railroad. Can you imagine an elevated railroad behind the houses on East 16 and Marlborough?" The wealthy residents of Ditmas Park approached one of the chief engineers of the railroad, Charles Potts, and protested the building of an elevated line. "He approached his supervisor and the only other option was to put the tracks 18 feet down uncovered, and that's the way it's been ever since”. You can thank those same residents for the Beverley Road station. The railroad was going to eliminate the Beverley Road station because the Beverley and Cortelyou Road stations are only one block apart, in fact they're the closest stations in the NYC subway system.

  • If you don’t feel quite at home in New York City, but still want easy access to the opportunities it provides, Ditmas Park is for you. You can have the Wall Street career, the glamorous parties, and the hip restaurant scene and still come home to a large home on a quiet, tree-lined street. Downtown Ditmas Park has several commercial strips, but the heart is Cortelyou between East 17th and Coney Island Avenue. Flatbush, Church, and Newkirk Ave are all lined with shops. Everything you need is within walking distance, which is a rarity in Brooklyn. Things to do: Ditmas Park is home to the recently restored Kings Theatre. Before that, people likely knew the neighborhood because they’d gone to an event at Sycamore. Several neighborhood spots are foodie destinations, which makes it easy to get friends to visit but also means your neighborhood spot probably has a wait for a table. Don’t forget about Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery. The neighborhood draws plenty of visitors to see the historic homes of Prospect Park South and the Dutch Reform Church. Affordability Affordability all depends on what you’re comparing it to. The price of a 1-bedroom in Ditmas Park will get you a nice house in most of America or a parking spot in Chelsea. Transportation The B/Q runs through Ditmas Park. The 2/5 and F/G flank the neighborhood, providing backup options. The B and Q have few stops, so the trip into Manhattan is considerably faster than the express 4/5 from Crown Heights. There is also frequent bus service along several lines, although bunching means a bus that’s scheduled every five minutes is actually five busses every 25 minutes. #ditmas
